 owner manual does not mention the flip down panel March 9, 2010

The DVR670KU OWNER'S MANUAL fails to mention that on some of the units you have to flip open the lower panel to get to all the buttom 8-21. I called Toshiba and the first customer service person i talk to did not tell me about this problem. I was real clear about the problem i was having and while he went to talk to his superviosr, create a file and talk to the engineers. I had to wait multipe times. I spent an hour or more on the phone. That person wanted me to take a pictures of the product front and back and send it to the company since they "never had this problem" before. Finally I got to a supervisor. He told me that the lower panel needed to be flipped down. My final question to him was why didn't the customer service person who tied up my life for too long a time tell me about the flip down panel.(I'm guessing poor training.) He wasted my time and his companies time. Toshiba should know that the first person that a customer talks represents the whole company.
I won't buy another TOSHIBA product ever and I won't recommend their products. If I am asked about this product by anyone I will tell them about the problemsI have discovered so far. I just can't wait to find the other problems!

After suffering with the Toshiba D-VR4 for several years we were hesitant to stay with Toshiba when upgrading. We should not have worried - we could not be happier.
We wanted the built-in digital tuner to take advantage of an area with high quality air transmission, along with the DVD/VCR combo capability. We are about forty miles from Sutro Tower in San Francisco with good line-of-sight reception. The digital recordings on DVDs as well as tape are outstanding; the HDMI out transfer to our HDTV gives stunning results. It is common knowledge that air transmission provides the cleanest signal. The DVR 670 takes advantage of that. Even though we are blocked from HD recording (the nonsense legal prohibition), the digital recording closely approximates the actual HDTV picture quality.
Toshiba has also improved its manual and seems to have simplified some functions. We assume there has been some improvement in the IC integration and functionality. We highly recommend the DVR 670

Previously I owned a separate VCR and DVD player, but when the VCR finally gave out, I was shocked to discover that replacing it with another stand-alone unit was no longer an option. Okay - Plan B. I researched VCR/DVD combo units and finally landed on this one. I read the other reviewers - some loved it, some did not. I'm glad I went with my gut and bought it anyway, from Amazon. Right away I liked the good price and free shipping. Then I discovered I liked the machine. True, the manual is large and can be intimidating, but I learned a long time ago that you don't need to know how to do everything in a manual, just what you personally want to do. It didn't take long to learn how to record from television or copy from a video to a DVD, the two things I really wanted. My only disappointment is that some videos seem to be copy-protected and can't be transferred onto DVD. But this is not the fault of the machine. If you want a good VCR and DVD and have need for a built-in tuner, as I did, this machine is for you.

The machine seemed to work fine for the first two weeks but then the analog tuner stopped working (the digital tuner is still OK). Toshiba technical support seemed puzzled (not a common problem they claim) and made me redo all the setup stuff I had already done myself a couple times. I subsequently discovered the VCR cannot process any sound (either recorded on this unit or from a tape recorded on another machine). Bottom line, it is defective. Toshiba told me to ship it to their repair depot in Mass. (I'm in AZ) so that is going to cost me another $20 and at least several weeks. They will pay return shipping (how nice of them considering it is defective merchandise). Remember the good old days when manufacturers had local repair outlets? Wonder if the thing will ever work right so while it seemed a decent unit while it worked (worst owner's manual ever), I have my doubts.

Disappointed with Toshiba. I first purchased a model 570 - no VCR. I couldn't finish SETUP with HDMI. The unit powered down by itself and I couldn't revive it. I sent it back purchased this model 670. I got all the way through the SETUP and PLAYBACK of tape and disc. I recorded to tape from TV and was attempting to record to disc when the picture started pulsing on and off, 3-5 second intervals. I powered the unit down and the picture was fine. I reconnected from HDMI with 3-wire same condition. I boxed it up and sent it back. To exacerbate my situation I had purchased a model 670 for my wife. We set it with good results for three days then CHANNEL SELECTION was lost. We went through SETUP AUTO SELECTION again-two stations stayed. MANUAL SELECTION resulted in losing all we programmed.
Boxed it up and sent it back. Three strikes and Toshiba is out.
